It was run by successive generations of owners called Hachizaemon, and Jisho was the second of them. He took over the family business at the end of the 1680s and began publishing illustrated kyogen books. He expanded his business to include Actor Hyoban-ki (Actor's Mouth Shamisen) published in 1799 and Ukiyo-zoshi (Ukiyo-zoshi) published in 1701, with Ejima Kiseki as the author. The Hyoban-ki established a format that was followed until the end of the Edo period, and Ukiyo-zoshi had some ups and downs at one time, but from around 1745 it became the leading publisher.
