Scenes from the story of Isaac have been found since ancient times in works such as the Vienna Genesis, but the scene of the Sacrifice of Isaac, which is considered a type of the crucifixion of Christ, has been depicted in many separate works. A depiction of a hand reaching out from heaven stopping Abraham as he holds a blade over Isaac (San Vitale Mosaic, 6th century), and later dramatic depictions such as an angel descending from heaven were popular (Rembrandt's The Sacrifice of Isaac, 1635).
