Accumulation - Stacking

The recipient of the gift piles up the gifts and displays them. At shrines, you can see mountains of straw-covered four-liter barrels donated by sake brewers and others piled up outside the worship hall. This is the same psychology behind displaying donations during festivals. The same thing happens at store opening celebrations and in the worlds of Kabuki and Sumo, where in addition to sake barrels, rice bales, steamed sweets baskets, and fish trays are piled up in front of houses or in front of the wooden gates during performances. Similar customs include showing off wedding attire and piling up a single bale of incense money at funerals. In red-light districts such as Yoshiwara, customers would give new bedding to prostitutes as a sign of their familiarity, and these would be piled up and displayed in front of the store, called piled bedding or decorative bedding.

贈り物を受けた側で、その品物をうず高く積み上げ飾って披露するもの。神社では拝殿の外に、酒造業者などの贈った菰(こも)かむりの四斗樽(しとだる)が山のように積んであるのをみかける。祭礼時の寄付を貼(は)り出すのと同様の心理である。商店の開店祝い、歌舞伎(かぶき)、相撲(すもう)界でも同様のことがあり、興行時などに酒樽のほかにも俵物(たわらもの)、菓子の蒸籠(せいろう)、魚の盤台(ばんだい)などを、家の表や木戸の前などに積み上げた。類似習俗としては、婚礼の衣装見せ、葬儀の際の一俵(いっぴょう)香典を積み上げることなどがある。吉原などの遊廓(ゆうかく)では、積み夜具とも飾り夜具ともいって、遊女となじみになったしるしに客が新調の夜具を贈り、それを店の前に積み上げ飾ることがあった。
