…After a serious illness at the age of 29, he deepened his faith in Taoism, studied under Sun Youyue, and became the legitimate successor of the Shangqing Taoist scriptures. In 492 (Yongming 10), at the age of 37, he gave up his official career and retired to Mt. Kuqu (Mao Mountain) in Jurong County, Jiangsu Province, where he called himself Huayang Retirement and worked to establish the Shangqing sect. From then until 500 (Yongyuan 2), he visited famous mountains around the country to search for original copies of the Shangqing scriptures and compiled the two doctrinal works, Zhenhuo and Dengzhenyinke, while completing a series of medical texts, including the Compendium of the Materia Medica, aiming to complete a new Taoist doctrine backed by scientific theory. …
