The Vatican Library is a library in Vatican City. The collection of books in the library began in the 15th century, but its origins date back to the 4th century, when Pope Damasus I founded the Roman Archives, and it housed documents and records from that time for the 7th century. When the Papacy moved to Avignon in 1309, the library followed suit, but then returned to Rome, and it came to be called the Vatican Library. The library has survived to this day under the name of Pope Nicholas V (reigned 1447-55), who was famous for being a bibliophile and used his influence and financial means to collect books during his time in office.
