This yoga was introduced by the Nath sect of Hinduism and is said to have been founded by the 13th century sage Gorakhnath (Gorashanath), from North India. Based on the doctrine of Shaivite Tantrism (Tantra), it aims to use the breath, a type of life energy, to awaken the sexual power (Shakti) that takes the form of a snake called Kundalini and lies dormant at the bottom of the spine, and to have it rise up the spine via several chakras, which are energy reservoirs.
