A term used in Noh and Kyogen. Among the Hayashigoto Kodan, which consists of music and gestures, those in which the actors (tachiyaku, tachikata) express on stage a certain degree of ideological elements are called 'wata'. There are seven types of wata in Noh: 'kakeri', 'iroe', and 'kirigumi', which are played with the flute (nohkan), small drum, and large drum, 'maibataraki', 'uchiaibataraki', 'inori', and both types of 'tachimawari', which include the use of taiko drums. 'Kakeri' shows the excited state of the ghosts of samurai and mad women, and is used in plays such as 'Shunzei Tadanori', 'Ukifune', 'Sumida River', and 'Semimaru'.
