Case-hardening steel

Japanese: 肌焼鋼 - はだやきこう（英語表記）case-hardening steel

This is not the name of a specific type of steel, but a general term for structural steel suitable for carburizing surface hardening. The carbon content is kept below 0.20% to make it easier to carburize, and the inside is low carbon to maintain toughness, and there are both carbon steel and low alloy steel. When carburizing steel with a high carbon content, it must first be wrapped in iron oxide powder (iron ore, mill scale, etc.) and heated to decarburize it.

特別な鋼種の名称ではなく，浸炭表面硬化に適する構造用鋼の総称。炭素含量を 0.20%以下の程度に押えて浸炭しやすくし，内部は低炭素で粘靭性を保つのがねらいで，炭素鋼も低合金鋼もある。炭素含量の高い鋼に浸炭する場合はあらかじめ酸化鉄粉 (鉄鉱石，ミルスケールなど) で包んで加熱し脱炭しておかなければならない。
