One of the popular seats in theaters during the Edo period. During the Shotoku and Kyoho eras (1711-1736), they were the seats on the first floor at the front, from the front edge of the stage to the aisles (walks) leading to the left and right sides at the back. During the Kyowa era (1801-1804), a square partition (shikirimasu) was built here, and a small portion of kiriotoshi remained at the rear of the hanamichi, but after the Bunka era (1804-18), they disappeared. It is said that the name kiriotoshi comes from the fact that they were lower than the box seats on either side, which were the higher-class seats, but there is no definite proof. To enter kiriotoshi, one had to buy a kiriotoshi ticket (a type of ticket) with the name of the theater branded on it at the partition area at the entrance, and in the mid-Edo period, this cost 132 mon.
