American composer and pianist. Also known as Gershwin. Born in New York to Russian immigrants, he first touched the piano in his teens. After dropping out of business school, he became a pianist and publicity officer for a music publisher, and in his spare time, he also tried his hand at composing. In 1919, his song "Swanee" was sung by Al Jolson and became a big hit, and his first musical, "La La Lucille," was performed on the Broadway stage. In 1922, he released the one-act opera "Blue Monday Blues," a precursor to "Porgy and Bess" in its subject matter and writing style. In 1924, he wrote "Rhapsody in Blue" for P. Whiteman's jazz band at his request, which caused a great sensation, and the following year, in 1925, he completed "Piano Concerto in F Major," which made him famous in the classical music world. After that, he produced the musical Strike Up the Band (1927), the symphonic poem An American in Paris (1928), and the groundbreaking opera Porgy and Bess (1935), which featured black commoners as protagonists. Just two years after the birth of this work, which became one of the pinnacles of 20th-century opera, he died of a brain tumor at the age of 38. → Grofé/Rhapsody → Related topics Kelly | Balanchine | Musical Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
