Pier Paolo Pasolini

Pier Paolo Pasolini

Italian poet, novelist, and film director. After graduating from the University of Bologna in his hometown, he moved to Rome. He made a name for himself as a left-wing poet, with works such as The Bones of Gramsci (1957), and as a novelist with works such as The Life of a Young Man (1955) and The Intense Life (1959). His poetic technique of piling up concrete images attracted the attention of the film world, and after writing many screenplays, including Fellini's Nights of Cabiria, he made his directorial debut with The Beggar (1961). He gradually broke away from the influences of neorealism and documentaries, and created his own unique worlds by breathing modern life into classics, such as The Miracle of St. Michelangelo (1964), Apollo's Inferno (1967), and Medea (1969). After making allegorical works such as "Teorema" (1968), he gradually shifted his interest to works that glorified eroticism, such as "The Canterbury Tales" (1972), but just after completing "Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom" (1975), he was beaten to death by a 19-year-old boy. His films were backed by theoretical interests, and he published an essay titled "Cinema as Poetry" (1966) and a collection of essays titled "Pagan Empiricism" (1972).
