The club was founded in 1905 in Chicago by Paul P. Harris (1868-1947), a lawyer, and four friends, with the principle of one member per profession. The club's goals are (1) to broaden acquaintances through service opportunities, (2) to raise the ethical standards of one's profession, (3) to apply the ideal of service to all aspects of personal life, and (4) to promote international understanding, goodwill, and peace. Membership is open to businessmen or professionals with discretionary powers, and the club selects representatives of each profession in its area and invites them to join.
