Bionics - bionics (English spelling)

The word bionics is a combination of the Greek word bion, meaning "source of life," and the suffix ics, which indicates the science of life. It is a field of engineering that aims to develop machines and systems that incorporate the excellent functions of living organisms. The term bionics was proposed in 1958 by Jack Ellwood Steele (1924-2009) of the U.S. Air Force, and was first used officially at the First Bionics Symposium held in Dayton, Ohio, in September 1960. The background to the holding of this symposium was the stagnation of technology, especially electronics, which had rapidly developed after World War II. Pattern recognition and flexible body movements that are effortless for humans and animals were not easy for computers and machines at the time to perform. This led to a movement to learn from and imitate living organisms. However, without achieving the expected results, in the 1970s, bionics research, which was strongly focused on applications, retreated, and research aimed at elucidating the principles of information processing in living organisms, such as bioinformation engineering, began to progress. While bionics seeks to understand the information principles of living organisms, there has been active research into the realization of superior functions by focusing on the structures and materials of living organisms. This is called biomimetics. Incidentally, this term is said to have been coined by biophysicist Otto Herbert Schmitt (1913-1998) in the late 1950s and 1960s. Furthermore, around 2005, research began, mainly in Japan, to artificially realize superior systems not just for individuals, but for ecosystems as a whole. This is called nature technology.

ギリシア語で「生命の源」を意味するbionに、「―学」を示す接尾語icsをつけた造語で、生物の優れた機能を取り入れた機械やシステムの開発を目的とした工学の一分野である。バイオニクスの語は、1958年、アメリカ空軍のスティールJack Ellwood Steele（1924―2009）によって提案され、公式には、1960年9月、アメリカのオハイオ州デイトンで開かれた第1回バイオニクス・シンポジウムで初めて使用された。このシンポジウムが開催された背景には、第二次世界大戦後急速に発達したエレクトロニクスを中心とする技術の行き詰まりがある。人間や動物にとって何の苦もないパターン認識や柔軟な身体の動きを、当時の計算機や機械で行うのは容易ではなかった。そこで生物に学び、真似(まね)をしようという動きが出てきたといえる。しかし、期待された成果の出ないまま、1970年代になると、応用を強く意識したバイオニクスという研究は後退し、生体情報工学など、生体での情報処理の原理を解明することを目標とした研究が進められるようになった。バイオニクスが生物の情報原理を求めているのに対し、一方で、生物の構造や材料に着目して、その優れた機能を実現しようとする研究が活発に行われるようになった。これをバイオミメティックスとよんでいる。ちなみに、この用語は、1950年代後半から1960年代にかけて、生物物理学者のシュミットOtto Herbert Schmitt（1913―1998）が命名したとされている。さらに2005年ごろから、個体だけでなく、生態系としての優れた仕組みを人工的に実現しようとする研究が日本を中心に始まっている。これをネイチャーテクノロジーとよんでいる。
