A relatively large rock body with a surface area of 100 square kilometers or more. Also called a batholith. Large bodies measuring 200 kilometers long and 80 kilometers wide are known. The shape of the bottom is not well understood. Most are medium- or coarse-grained granite, granodiorite, and quartz diorite. In some cases, large rock bodies have been transferred to the surrounding sedimentary rocks, and some retain sedimentary rock-like textures or resemble metamorphic rocks, suggesting that in addition to igneous action, metamorphism, metasomatism, and remelting of the rock body may be the cause.
