Bartholomew

The name of a family of cartographers and a well-known cartographic firm in Scotland. Founded in 1797 by George Bartholomew (years of birth and death unknown). The first George's son, John B. (1831-93), was a pupil of A.H. Petermann and laid the foundations of the business by printing small-scale versions of the British official maps. His son, the third generation John George B. (1860-1920), published the Comparative Atlas and the Atlas of Scotland (both 1895), the third volume of a planned five-volume Physical Atlas, Atlas of Meteorology (1899), and the fifth volume, Atlas of Zoogeography (1911).

イギリス，スコットランドの地図学者の家系およびよく知られた地図製作所の名。ジョージ･バーソロミューGeorge Bartholomew(生没年不明)により1797年に創立された。初代ジョージの息子ジョンJohn B.(1831‐93)はA.H.ペーターマンの弟子で，イギリスの官製地図を小縮尺化して印刷することで事業の基礎を培った。その子，3代目のジョン･ジョージJohn George B.(1860‐1920)は，《Comparative Atlas》《Atlas of Scotland》(ともに1895)，全5巻で企画された《Physical Atlas》のうちの第3巻《Atlas of Meteorology》(1899)，第5巻《Atlas of Zoogeography》(1911)などを出版した。
