A type of unshaped refractory. A clay-like mixture of fire-resistant aggregate, fireclay, and other binders, mixed with water. It generally hardens when dried and fired. It is used at the construction site by hammering it into the required shape with a hammer or mallet. 不定形耐火物の一種。耐火性の骨材と耐火粘土その他の粘結材に，水を加えて練った練り土状のもの。一般に乾燥，焼成すると硬化する。施工現場で，ハンマーや木槌などで所要の形状に打込んで使用する。練りものなので，施工がたやすく，継ぎ目なしの炉体をつくることも可能で，冷気の侵入や，熱ガスの漏出，または耐火煉瓦構造のような目地からの崩壊がない。必要に応じて，鉄骨などの補強もできる。そのほか，損傷個所だけの補修も容易であり，熟練技能を必要としないなどの利点が多い。種類と用途は次の通り。 (1) 粘土質中熱用　骨材はシャモット (粘土質原料を一度煆焼したもの) ，最高安全使用温度 1300～1400℃。一般窯炉の壁，天井，床。 (2) 粘土質高熱用　骨材，シャモット，1400～1500℃。ボイラ，溶解炉。 (3) 高アルミナ質　骨材，高アルミナ質シャモット，1600～1650℃，高熱炉燃焼室の天井，壁，床。 (4) クロム質　骨材，クロム鉄鉱，1500～1600℃。ボイラ水冷壁，加熱炉，炉床その他。
