Mikawa Cotton

Cotton cloth made in Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). Cotton has been cultivated in this region since the Edo period, but it is said that it was only in the Meiji period that cotton cloth made from this crop began to be sold as Mikawa cotton. It is said to have first been cultivated in the area centered around Miyacho, Hoi County, Aichi Prefecture (now Gamagori City). It is a thick white fabric used for obi cores, tabi soles, hanten coats, noren curtains, sake strainers, etc. The hanten coats and momohiki called sanpaku or sanpaku cotton (short for Mikawa white cotton) from the Okazaki region are particularly famous.

三河国（愛知県）でつくられる綿布のこと。この地方では、江戸時代から綿の栽培が行われていたが、これでつくった綿布を三河木綿といって売り出すようになったのは明治に入ってからのことといわれる。愛知県宝飯(ほい)郡三谷(みや)町（現蒲郡(がまごおり)市）を中心とする地方で行われたのが、その初めといわれる。帯芯(おびしん)、足袋(たび)底、半纏(はんてん)、のれん、酒漉(こ)し袋などに用いられる地厚の白生地(きじ)が多い。とくに岡崎地方の三白(さんぱく)または三白木綿（三河白木綿の略）といわれる半纏、ももひきは有名である。
