A general term for fish belonging to the Gobiidae family of the Perciformes order. It is said that there are about 700 species confirmed in the world, forming one of the largest fish groups. They are mainly distributed from the tropics to temperate zones, and are particularly common in Southeast Asia. About 150 species live in Japan. Due to the large number of species, they have a wide variety of forms and ecology. In terms of habitat, there are some that live only in freshwater areas (donko (illustration), river goby), some that move between freshwater and saltwater as they grow (yoshinobori (illustration), ukigori (illustration)), some that live in brackish waters near river mouths (mahaze (illustration), shirouo (illustration)), and some that live in relatively deep waters offshore (ryugu goby, yami goby).
