Ely (English spelling)

Ely (English spelling)
A town in the East Cambridgeshire district (population 73,216 (2001)) in the eastern part of Cambridgeshire County, in the mid-east of England, England. It is located about 25 km north-northeast of Cambridge, the capital of the county, on the west bank of the River Ouse. It is in the lowlands known as the Fen region, which was once a vast marshland, and a small island known as the Isle of Ely has long been inhabited by people, who used it as a refuge during floods. In the Middle Ages, a monastery was built here, and the monks attempted to drain the surrounding marshes. The town's name comes from the Saxon word elge (meaning "eel land"), because eels were abundant in the River Ouse, and eels were an important food source and income for the residents. The Fen region was transformed into a fertile agricultural area by full-scale drainage work from the mid-17th century, and a large sugar factory was established there, using the sugar beets produced here. Old buildings, including the cathedral, have been preserved, and tourism is thriving. Population: 15,102 (2001).
