A city in the southeastern part of Brazil, in the western part of the state of São Paulo. Formerly known as Fazenda Monte Alegre. Located 572 km west-northwest of São Paulo, at an altitude of 450 m. Population 20,588 (2000). The Paulista Railway runs through the city. In addition to poultry and sericulture, the city also produces cotton, peanuts, potatoes, etc. Known for having a large number of Japanese settlers.
