The capital of the Western Highlands region of Papua New Guinea. Population 13,000 (1980). There is a domestic airport, and a highway runs from Lae, a city on the east coast of New Guinea. The region's specialty products, such as black tea, coffee, and raw materials for insecticides (obtained from a type of daisy that grows at altitudes of 1,800 meters or higher), are collected in factories in or near the town and turned into products.
