Khaz'al (English spelling)

1863-64-1936
An Arab tribal leader in the Khuzestan region of Iran. He effectively ruled the region for about 30 years from the end of the 19th century. At the outbreak of World War I, he signed an agreement with Britain and planned to separate and become independent from the Tehran government. In 1918, he united Arab tribes and started a rebellion, but was defeated in a battle with the forces of Reza Khan (Reza Shah Pahlavi) and arrested. He was then forced to live in confinement in Tehran, and was eventually murdered. [Yaoshi Makoto]

イランのフージスターン地方のアラブ系族長。19世紀末から約30年間にわたって同地方を実質的に支配した。第1次世界大戦の勃発に際してはイギリスと協定を結び，テヘラン政府からの分離･独立を企図した。1918年にはアラブ系諸部族を糾合し反乱を起こすが，レザー･ハーン(レザー･シャー･パフラビー)麾下の部隊との戦闘に敗れ，逮捕される。その後はテヘランでの幽閉生活を強いられ，結局は謀殺された。【八尾師誠】
