John Dory (Zeus japonicus)

Japanese: マトウダイ(的鯛) - マトウダイ（英語表記）Zeus japonicus

A marine fish of the John Dory order and John Dory family (illustration). Also called John Dory. Its flat, long, oval body has a large black spot bordered by a light color in the center of the side, reminiscent of a target, hence the name. Depending on the region, it is also called John Dory, Kurumadai, Mondai, or Tsukinowa. Its body is dark gray and covered with fine scales. Its head is large and its eyes are located at the top. Its mouth is also large and opens diagonally upwards, and its upper jaw can be pushed forward. The membrane between the spines at the front of the dorsal fin extends long and thread-like, reaching the tail in adult fish.

マトウダイ目マトウダイ科の海産魚（イラスト）。マトダイともいう。平たく長卵形をした体の側面ほぼ中央に淡色で縁どられた大黒斑があり，的を思わせるのでこの名がある。地方によりマトハゲ，クルマダイ，モンダイ，ツキノワなどとも呼ばれる。体色は暗灰色，表面は細かいうろこでおおわれる。頭が大きく眼は上方につく。口も大きくて斜め上方に開き，上あごを前方に突き出すことができる。背びれ前部の棘（きよく）間にある皮膜が長く糸状に伸長し，成魚では尾に達する。
