Protonema - Genshitai

This refers to the thread-like plant body formed by the germination of spores of mosses and ferns. The protonema of ferns and liverworts (a type of moss) usually consists of just a few cells and does not branch, but in the moss species, the protonema is well developed and branches out in many places. In ferns and liverworts, the cells at the tip of the protonema differentiate and develop, but in the moss species, separate buds form here and there around the branched protonema, and from these develop normal plant bodies.

コケ植物、シダ植物の胞子が発芽して形成する糸状の植物体をいう。シダ植物や、コケ植物のなかの苔類(たいるい)の原糸体は、数細胞からなり、枝分れもしないのが普通であるが、コケ植物のなかのマゴケ類では原糸体がよく発達し、多数の枝分れをする。シダ植物や苔類では、原糸体の先端の細胞が分化して発達していくが、マゴケ類では枝分れした原糸体のところどころに、別に芽が形成され、これから普通の植物体が発達してくる。
