A plant of the Nymphaeaceae family native to North America that grows underwater and has been naturalized in Japan (illustration). The stems are long and slender, and many adventitious roots grow from the nodes. There are two types of leaves, with the submerged leaves arranged opposite each other and the leaf blade having 5-7 lobes, each of which is further divided into thread-like lobes. Another name for this plant is Fusajunsai, which, together with its name Hagoromomo, comes from the shape of the leaves. The floating leaves are shield-shaped, the leaf blade is oblong and smaller than the submerged leaves, and a flower stalk grows from the leaf axil. The flowers grow singly on the stalk and are 1.5-2 cm in diameter. There are three white sepals and petals. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
