Iraj Mirza

A modern Iranian poet. Born into the royal family of the Qajar dynasty, he initially served as a court poet, but also studied modern Western literature. He became a government official and lived in seclusion in his later years. He is well known for his simple, powerful, yet elegant style of poetry. In the history of Persian literature, he is placed at the end of the classical poets and the beginning of the modern period. He satirized Iranian politics, opposed women wearing veils, advocated the need for child education, praised the greatness of motherhood, and exposed the hypocrisy of religious leaders. 近代イランの詩人。カージャール朝の王の家系に生まれ，はじめ宮廷詩人として仕えたが，近代西洋文学も学んだ。官吏となり，晩年は隠遁。平易で力強く，しかも優雅な詩風が親しまれた。ペルシア文学史では，古典派詩人の最後，近代派の初めに位置する。イランの政治を風刺し，婦人のベール着用に反対し，児童教育の必要を説き，母性の偉大さをたたえ，宗教指導者の偽善を暴いた。【加賀谷寛】
