Japan-France Agreement

This agreement was concluded in Paris on June 10, 1907 (Meiji 40) in response to a proposal from France. It was part of the territorial division policy of the great powers from the beginning of the 20th century until World War I. It promised to protect the independence and territory of the Qing Dynasty, and to confirm the mutual sphere of influence between Japan and France, and a declaration on French Indochina was also signed. Japan hoped for French capital to invest in Japan, but France approached Japan, the country that had won the war against Russia, in order to seek reconciliation between the two countries while at the same time preventing Germany from advancing into the Far East. This agreement, along with the Anglo-Japanese Alliance (1902) and the Russo-Japanese Agreement (1907), resulted in the expansion of the conflict between the Triple Entente of Britain, France, and Russia and the Tripartite Pact of Germany, Austria, and Italy into Asia. It remained in force until the outbreak of the Pacific War.

フランスからの対日提議を受けて1907年（明治40）6月10日パリで締結された協約。20世紀初頭から第一次世界大戦に至る間の列強の領土分割政策の一環。清(しん)国の独立・領土保全、日仏相互勢力範囲の確認などを約し、フランス領インドシナに関する宣言書も調印された。日本はフランス資本の対日投資を期待したが、フランスは対露戦勝国日本に接近して、日露両国の和解を策しつつ、同時にドイツの極東進出を阻止しようとした。本協約は、日英同盟（1902）、日露協約（1907）とともに、英仏露三国協商と独墺(おう)伊三国同盟の対立をアジアにまで拡大する結果となった。太平洋戦争勃発(ぼっぱつ)時まで存続した。
