The Korean hyang yak began in the 12th year of the reign of Jungjong of the Yi dynasty (1517), when Kim An-guk published the Hangul-written "Eonhaeryo-shi Hyangyek." It was practiced in local areas until 1904, but became more popular during the 16th and early 17th centuries under the reigns of Jungjong, Myeongjong, and Seonjo, when the Sirin faction established local order, and during the reign of Jeongjo (1777-1800), when evil religions (Christianity) were infiltrating the country.
