He excelled in both the arts and the military, and was nicknamed “El Magnánimo” (the Great King) for his conquest of the Kingdom of Naples and his generous treatment of many literary scholars and artists at his court. Alfonso, who aspired to exercise strong royal authority, was at odds from the time of his accession with the Aragonese parliaments, which were meticulous in maintaining their respective laws and political traditions. For this reason, he focused his policies solely on expanding his hegemony in the Mediterranean and defending his own interests. …
