1427‐97 Arab historian of the Mamluk period. Born in Cairo, he studied folklore and history under the contemporary writer Asqalani (1372-1449), then traveled to Syria from Mecca and Medina to study. After returning to the country, he was patronized by the Mamluk (slave soldier) official Yashbak and produced a vast body of work. His main works include "Made of Gold," which supplements Macrīzī's chronicle, "Shining Light," a vast dictionary of contemporary biographies, and "Book of Condemnation of Historians," which severely criticized religious studies.
