Jū yán hǎi (English spelling)

Japanese: 居延海 - きょえんかい（英語表記）Jū yán hǎi

A salt lake in the desert on the plateau in the western Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. Also known as Gashun Nor. A weak stream originating in the Qilian Mountains in the south flows north and branches into the East River (Nalin River) and the West River (Mulin River), and this lake was formed by the latter. The area changes due to fluctuations in river flow caused by the dry climate. This area was an important location for northern tribes in ancient times, and there are remains of a watchtower from the Han Dynasty. The East River forms Soko Nor. [Ono Kikuo]

中国，内モンゴル自治区西部，高原上の砂漠にある塩湖。別名ガシュン･ノール(嘎順諾爾)。南の祁連（きれん）山脈に発した弱水は，北流して東河(納林河)と西河(木林河)に分流するが，後者によってできた湖である。乾燥気候による河川流量の変動のため，その面積も変わる。この地は，古く北方民族に対する要地で，漢代の見張り台跡もある。なお，東河はソコ･ノール(蘇古諾爾)を形成する。【小野菊雄】
