A general term for birds of the genus Swan, family Anatidae. There are eight species, most of which are large and have pure white feathers, but some are black like the Australian mute swan. In Japan, two species, the whooper swan and the tundra swan, migrate as winter birds, and the mute swan, which is either kept in captivity or has become feral, can also be seen.
