〘Noun〙 Gunpowder is packed into small bamboo or paper tubes, which are strung together. When lit, they explode one by one, making a loud noise. It began as an event in ancient China on New Year's Day, when green bamboo was burned over a fire and the sound of it expelling drove away evil spirits said to live in the mountains. It is now widely held on national holidays as well, to express congratulations and lift spirits. In Japan, it is often confused with the Sagicho fires lit on the 15th of the New Year.
