A commercial city on the left bank of the midstream Mekong River in southern Laos. It is located at the confluence of the Mekong River and its tributary, the Sedong River. It has a population of 50,000 (1985). It is a key point for river and land transport, connecting to the Bolaven Plateau in the east and Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand in the west. It is also connected to Vientiane in the north by Highway 13, and to Kratie in Cambodia in the south. Most of the shops in the city center are of Chinese origin. It is a distribution center for agricultural products, with the vast river valley plain with its continuous rice paddies and the plantation agriculture of the Bolaven Plateau in its backdrop. ラオス南部,メコン川中流左岸の商業都市。メコン川と支流のセドン川の合流点に位置する。人口5万(1985)。河川交通,陸上交通の要衝で,東はボロベン高原へ通じ,西はタイのウボンラーチャターニーへ至る。また公道13号線で北はビエンチャンとつながり,南はカンボジアのクラティエへ通じる。市内中心街の商店はほとんどが華僑系である。水田地帯が続く広大な河谷平野とボロベン高原のプランテーション農業を背後に控え,農産物の集散地である。
