…After the death of Shakyamuni, or Gautama Buddha, his teachings (dhamma) and the discipline of the Buddhist order (vinaya) were passed down orally in the form of memorizable poems and short sentences. As the Buddhist order became established, the teachings were compiled into the Sutta-piṭaka and the discipline into the Vinaya-piṭaka. The Sutta-piṭaka is divided into the Long, Middle, Proportionate and Extraordinary Agamas or Nikāyas (sections), and the whole is collectively called the Agamas or Agama-sutras.…
