A former town in Nishi-gun, Hokkaido. Facing the Sea of Japan, it was known as the northern limit of the Kuchi-Ezo region. Settlements developed on the small flat area along the coast, and the area is rich in forest resources, with fishing being the main industry. It is home to Monshoan and Kenichi Onsen. 北海道爾志(にし)郡の旧町。日本海に面し，口蝦夷(くちえぞ)地の北限といわれた。海沿いのわずかな平地に集落が発達，森林資源が豊富で，漁業が主産業。門昌庵，見市(けんいち)温泉がある。2005年10月二海郡八雲町へ編入。220.31km2。3659人（2003）。
