Bâkî, Mahmud Abdülbâkî

Born: 1526. Istanbul
Died: April 7, 1600. Court poet of the Ottoman Empire in Istanbul. Born to an ulema (Islamic scholar), he was apprenticed to a saddler, but later studied law and became a courtier of Suleiman the Magnificent. He showed great talent for precise word selection and ingenious lyricism, and his solemn lament for the death of Suleiman the Magnificent is one of his masterpieces. His "Collection of Poems" (Dîvân) was translated from Arabic to Roman characters and published in 1936.

オスマン帝国の宮廷詩人。ウレマー (イスラムの学識者) の子として生れ，馬具屋の徒弟に出されたが，のち法律を学び，スレイマン1世の廷臣となった。言葉の厳密な選択や，巧妙な作詩法にすぐれた才能を示し，スレイマン1世の死をうたった荘厳な哀悼の詩は傑作の一つ。『詩集』 Dîvânは，1936年にアラビア文字からローマ字に移され，出版された。
