1869‐1907
Polish playwright, poet and painter. Born in the ancient city of Krakow, he spent almost his entire life there, except for a few years abroad. Although he criticized Polish Romanticism, he was in fact the successor to the artistic ideals of Mickiewicz and others, and represented a kind of late Romanticism (heavy influenced by Nietzsche and Wagner), becoming the founder of modern Polish drama. He was also an exceptional painter, producing many masterpieces, especially in portraits. His representative plays include the fantastical satirical drama "The Wedding" (1901), two works based on the November Uprising of 1830, "November Night" (1904) and "The Girl from Warsaw" (1898), and "Liberation" (1903), which symbolically depicts the conflict with the strong traditions of Romanticism.

ポーランドの劇作家，詩人，画家。古都クラクフに生まれ，数年の国外生活を除き，ほぼ一生をクラクフですごす。ポーランド･ロマン主義を批判しながらも実質的にはミツキエビチらの芸術理念の継承者であり，一種の後期ロマン主義を代表(ニーチェ，ワーグナーの影響が強い)，ポーランドの現代劇の始祖となった。画家としても非凡で，特に人物画に傑作が多い。戯曲の代表作に幻想的風刺劇《婚礼》(1901)，1830年の十一月蜂起に取材した2作《十一月の夜》(1904)，《ワルシャワの娘》(1898)，ロマン主義の強い伝統との葛藤を象徴的に描く《解放》(1903)等がある。
