Protea (English spelling)

Japanese: プロテア(英語表記)Protea
Protea (English spelling)
A general term for the genus Protea in the family Proteaceae. About 90 species are known from South Africa to tropical Africa, most of which are distributed in South Africa. It is widely imported into Japan as cut flowers, and is popular for its gorgeous flowers. It is an evergreen tree with a variety of shapes, from shrubs to tall trees. The leaves range from oval to linear like pine needles. The heads of the flowers at the top of the branches are often decorated with beautifully colored involucres. The inflorescences of the King Protea (P. cynaroides) can reach a diameter of 20 to 30 cm, and when the pink involucres are fully expanded, they resemble the sun. The leaves have oval blades on thin petioles. This species was designated the national flower of the Republic of South Africa in 1976. Other species imported as cut flowers include Protea grandiceps (P. grandiceps), Protea magnifica (P. magnifica), and Protea neriifolia (P. neriifolia). Cut flower production is carried out on a large scale in Australia.
