Located on the western edge of Alagoas state, about 300 km upstream from the mouth of the São Francisco River in northeastern Brazil, this three-tiered waterfall has a drop of about 80 m. It is very similar to Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River in Africa. The area around the waterfall is a national park. However, the São Francisco River Hydroelectric Company was founded in 1945 and built a power plant that uses the waterfall, so the waterfall is destined to disappear in the near future.
