カモ目カモ科ケワタガモ類の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この仲間にはオオケワタガモSomateria mollissima(英名common eider)，ケワタガモS.spectabilis(英名king eider)（イラスト），メガネケワタガモS.fischeri(英名spectacled eider)，コケワタガモPolysticta stelleri(英名Steller’s eider)の4種があり，いずれも北極圏かその近くで繁殖する。
