Seiichi Kishi

He was the second president of the Dai Nippon Amateur Sports Association (now the Japan Sports Association) and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He was born in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. He graduated from the Department of English Law at Tokyo Imperial University. He was an active rower while in school. While working as a lawyer, he devoted himself to the development of amateur sports, and in 1921 (Taisho 10), he became president of the Dai Nippon Amateur Sports Association as the successor to Jigoro Kano, and in 1924, he was elected an IOC member. After his death, the Kishi Memorial Gymnasium was built in Ochanomizu, Tokyo, for the 12th Tokyo Olympic Games in 1940 (Showa 15) (which was cancelled due to the Sino-Japanese War) using part of the 1 million yen donation he left in his will. Later, due to deterioration, it was relocated to a new location in Jinnan, Shibuya Ward in July 1964 (Showa 39) in preparation for the 18th Tokyo Olympic Games. The new facility, which will be renamed, is scheduled to be completed in spring 2019 on land adjacent to the New National Stadium.

大日本体育協会（現、日本スポーツ協会）2代目会長、国際オリンピック委員会（IOC）委員。島根県松江市出身。東京帝国大学英法科卒業。在学中はボート選手として活躍した。弁護士をするかたわらアマチュア・スポーツの発展に尽くし、1921年（大正10）に嘉納治五郎(かのうじごろう)の後任として大日本体育協会会長に就任、1924年IOC委員に選ばれた。岸記念体育館は彼の死後、その遺志による寄金100万円の一部をもとに1940年（昭和15）の第12回オリンピック東京大会（日中戦争で返上）のために東京・御茶ノ水に建てられたものである。その後、老朽化のため1964年（昭和39）7月、第18回オリンピック東京大会の開催を機に渋谷区神南に新設移転。2019年春には名称を変更した新施設が、新国立競技場に隣接する地に完成予定。
