Robert A. Heinlein

Robert A. Heinlein

An American science fiction writer. After graduating from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, he majored in mathematics and physics at the University of California Graduate School. He first published science fiction in 1939, but World War II put a stop to his career as a writer, and he began his career as a writer in earnest after the war. To date, he has won the Hugo Award for Best Novel four times for four works: The Peril of an Empire in the Solar System (1956), Starship Troopers (1959), The Stranger in a Different Land (1961), and The Harsh Mistress of the Moon (1967), a glorious record that speaks to his popularity and ability. The future world he depicts is always accurately captured as an extension of the development of modern science and society, and the lack of irrational leaps creates a powerful reality. The time and setting of his works are the near future of the 21st to 23rd centuries, and they are often set on relatively familiar planets and moons such as Earth, the Moon, and Mars. Another unique feature is that he always creates his works based on new concepts, avoiding repetition of the same theme as much as possible. Other notable works include the short story collection The Man Who Sold the Moon (1953), the first volume of a series of future histories, and the time-travel-themed Door into Summer (1957) and Time for Love (1973).
