A gourd-shaped iron bracelet that restrains the wrists and restricts the freedom of both arms, and was used in the Edo period as a method of light punishment and pretrial detention for commoners. Under shogunate law, handcuffs as a punishment were available in three grades: 100 days, 50 days, and 30 days. For 100 days, the punishment was every other day, and for 50 days or less, the person was required to appear at the magistrate's office to have the seal (a piece of paper pasted on the narrow central part and stamped) changed. It could be substituted for a fine, and sometimes it was imposed in addition to a fine (double punishment). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
