When we look back at our daily lives, we realize that our daily lives depend on many cultivated plants. Currently, there are approximately 2,300 species of cultivated plants in the world, which can be said to be a group of plants that were created by humans from wild plants at various times in different regions of the world over the past 10,000 years or so. Many cultivated plants have been fertilized by humans, protected from pests and diseases, and selected and crossbred by humans over a long period of time, so they are no longer able to survive in their natural state.

われわれの日常生活をふり返ってみると，毎日の生活が多くの栽培植物に依存していることに気がつく。現在世界中に栽培されている植物は，約2300種にのぼるが，それらは過去およそ1万年の間に世界の各地域でいろいろな時代に，野生の植物から人間の手によって作り出された一群の植物ということができる。栽培植物は人間が肥料を与えたり，病虫害から保護したり，長期間にわたり人間の手によって選択や交雑が行われてきたために，もはや自然状態においては生存できない状態になっているものが多い。
