Regarding the differentiation of functional areas within a city, EW Burgess proposed the concentric structure hypothesis in 1925, and in 1933 Hoyt proposed a sector theory of its transformation (Figure). Burgess's concentric structure hypothesis states that urban society expands concentrically and is divided into separate living areas, but he considered the existence of a transition zone between the city center and residential areas, and pointed out the mixture of light industry, immigrant settlements (often slum areas), and overflowing city center functions there.
