An old town in Uda County, occupying the mountainous area in the upper reaches of the Uda River in northern Nara Prefecture. The main settlement developed as a post town on the Ise Kaido road since ancient times, and the Kintetsu Osaka Line runs through it. It produces a lot of high-quality cedar and cypress, and is a thriving producer of eggplants, cucumbers and other vegetables, flowering trees, and shiitake mushrooms. In January 2006, it merged with Ouda Town, Utano Town, and Muro Village in Uda County to become Uda City. 64.41 km2 . 奈良県北部,宇陀川上流域の山地を占める宇陀郡の旧町。主集落は古くから伊勢街道の宿場町として発達,近鉄大阪線が通じる。良質のスギ,ヒノキを多産,ナス,キュウリなどの野菜,花木,シイタケの栽培が盛ん。2006年1月,宇陀郡大宇陀町,菟田野町,室生村と合併し市制,宇陀市となる。64.41km2。1万9404人(2003)。
