Zuishin-in Temple

This temple is located in Onogoryo-cho, Yamashina-ku, Kyoto City, and is of the Zentsuji school of the Shingon sect. It is called Gyuhi-san. It is also commonly called Zuishin-in Monzeki or Ono Monzeki. The principal image is Nyoirin Kannon. It was founded by Ningai in 1018 (Kannin 2), and was called Gyuhi-san Mandala-ji Temple, where a Nyoirin Kannon statue was enshrined. Ningai demonstrated his ability to understand the law and excelled in practical matters, and founded the Ono school, from which the six Ono schools branched off. Among them, since the fifth abbot Zoshun established the Zuishin-in school, Zuishin-in, which was one of the temples of Mandala-ji, became the name of a single mountain. During the Kamakura period, it became a monzeki temple and flourished, but was burned down during the Onin War, and in 1599 (Keicho 4), Zuishin-in was rebuilt on the former site of Mandala-ji. During the Meiji period, it was the head temple of the Ono school of Shingon Buddhism, but in 1931 (Showa 6), it merged with the Zentsuji school of Shingon Buddhism. Currently, it includes the main hall, front study, large entrance hall, and kuri (kitchen), and the grounds are a national historic site. Temple treasures include the seated statue of Amida Nyorai (late Heian period), seated statue of Vajrasattva, a colored Aizen mandala painting on silk, and Zuishin-in documents, all of which are important national cultural properties.
