The first Grand Prince of Kiev. Reigned 882-912. He was called Beshchi (the Seer). He was of Norman origin. After the death of Rurik, he became Prince of Novgorod, and in 882 he went to Kiev with the young Igor, murdered Askold and Zhir, and occupied the city. As the "mother of the cities of Rus," he led the Eastern Slavic tribes and fought against the Khazars, and in 907 he besieged Constantinople, and in 911 concluded a favorable trade treaty with them. According to legend, he died of a snake bite, but one source says he returned north, and his grave is in Ladoga.

初代のキエフ大公。在位882‐912年。ベーシチー(予見者)と称せらる。ノルマンの出身。リューリクの死後ノブゴロド公となり，幼いイーゴリを奉じて882年キエフに下り，アスコリドとジールを謀殺して占領。〈ルーシの町の母〉として東スラブ諸族を従え，ハザル族と戦い，また907年にはコンスタンティノープルを包囲し，911年に有利な通商条約を結んだ。伝説では蛇にかまれて死んだというが，一書によれば北へ帰ったとされ，墓はラドガにある。
