?-912 The first Grand Prince of Kiev. Reigned 882-912. He was called Beshchi (the Seer). He was of Norman origin. After the death of Rurik, he became Prince of Novgorod, and in 882 he went to Kiev with the young Igor, murdered Askold and Zhir, and occupied the city. As the "mother of the cities of Rus," he led the Eastern Slavic tribes and fought against the Khazars, and in 907 he besieged Constantinople, and in 911 concluded a favorable trade treaty with them.
