A language of the western group of Iranian languages. It is spoken by approximately 1.5 to 2.5 million people (estimated in 1959) in Baluchistan, which straddles southeastern Iran and southwestern Pakistan, as well as in southern Afghanistan, various parts of Iran, and Mari (Merv) in the Republic of Turkmenistan. Because it spans a vast area, it consists of many dialects, but they are mutually intelligible. Its development as a literary language is recent, and Baluchi printed matter can be found in large quantities, especially in Pakistan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
